Topographic and Atmospheric Pressure Mapping of Mars

چکیده
Introduction: The topography of Mars remained unknown until the first orbiting spacecraft, since early ground-based observations of Mars displayed only variations due to albedo which correspond to changes in surface composition and texture rather than changes in surface altitude. However a technique was being developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s to determine the Martian topography by measuring the spatial variation in the strength of the atmospheric CO2 absorption bands [1, 2, 3] and was later improved for use over limited Martian equatorial regions with the ISM instrument on board the Russian spacecraft Phobos 2 [4]. The observations presented here use near-infrared ground-based observations to produce relatively detailed topographic maps of Mars that correlate well with topographic maps produced by the Mars Orbiting Laser Altimeter (MOLA) on board the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS).

Digital Cartography with Hrsc on Mars Express
The High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on board of the European space mission Mars Express provides multispectral digital image data in high resolution as well as the systematic stereo coverage of our neighbouring planet. Thus, these data particularly meet the requirements of stereophotogrammetric processing and cartographic applications. Based on HRSC imagery, large-scale topographic and the...
متن کاملMars Atmospheric Characterization Using Advanced 2-μm Orbiting Lidar
Mars atmospheric characterization is critical for exploring the planet. Future Mars missions require landing massive payloads to the surface with high accuracy. The accuracy of entry, descent and landing (EDL) of a payload is a major technical challenge for future Mars missions. Mars EDL depends on atmospheric conditions such as density, wind and dust as well as surface topography. A Mars orbit...
متن کاملGeneration of Digital Topographic Maps of Planetary Bodies
In recent years, the exploration of the solar system was intensified. Several space missions have been planned, launched, or are in operation yet. Some of them are supplied with modern camera experiments: the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on Mars Express or the Cassini Imaging Science SubSystem (ISS). Especially HRSC data are well suited to derive Digital Terrain Models and color orthoim...
متن کاملTopographic Mapping Capability Analysis of Mars Exploration Rover 2003 Mission Imagery
This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the topographic mapping capabilities of images from the Mars Exploration Rover 2003 (MER) mission. The 3D measurement accuracies of Pancam (panoramic camera) and Navcam (navigation camera) stereo pairs are estimated using basic photogrammetric principles. The mapping capabilities of single-site panoramas, multi-site panoramas, and wide-baseline st...
متن کاملSaltation impact as a means for raising dust on Mars
Experiments were conducted under atmospheric pressures appropriate for Earth and Mars to determine the e,ciency of sand in saltation as a means for raising dust into the atmosphere under wind speeds which would otherwise be too low for dust entrainment. Experiments involving intimate mixtures of sand and dust (1:1 ratio by mass) showed that after an initial .urry of activity of a few seconds du...
